Canvas-Wrapped Silencers?
I'm almost done making THIS:
However, I'm a little confused by what looks like canvas wrapping around the barrel. What purpose does it serve and should I keep it or go without?

Re: Canvas-Wrapped Silencers?
from Springfield Armory Museum concerning the Sten gun:
"Mark IIS and Mark VIS models (sometimes recorded as 6(s)) were produced which incorporated an integral supressor. This would heat up rapidly when fired and a canvas cover was laced round for some protection."
keep it

Re: Canvas-Wrapped Silencers?
Heya, Ryan!
The suppressed Stens, the Mark II(S) and Mark VI(S) had the same sort of laced canvas cover. It was to protect the firers supporting hand as the suppressor would get quite toasty during rapid fire.
I'm guessing the OSS specified the same thing for the M3 as they would have been familiar with the suppressed Stens.

Re: Canvas-Wrapped Silencers?
Silencer Legging, Patton insisted that they be worn at all times. He relented on the tie, as it snagged brush.

Re: Canvas-Wrapped Silencers?
You will see similar covers on modern suppressor more lately. It serves more to cut down on the mirage through the optic now since they aren't being used as hand holds.

Re: Canvas-Wrapped Silencers?
The canvas was wrapped around the barrel covering the 1940's fireproof material that we have all come to love "Asbestos" All fireproof items back then were made out of asbestos, fireman informs used on the USN carriers, to the gloves the heavy machine gunners carried to change barrels both American and German.
